Science is constantly evolving. Researchers are constantly working around the clock to find cures to the most indeterminable of diseases. Long hours in the lab are grueling but it almost always seems worth it when one is aware that it can help improve the quality of someone’s life. At Columbia, I have had the chance to meet and work with some of the most incredible scientists in our time. However, the first person that I am always reminded of is Professor Richard Axel. Dr. Axel is aloof yet incredibly concentrated. He often takes long deep pauses, soaking in all that has been said and gaining awareness of his surroundings to the sharpest degree. After such a pause, he inhales slightly to articulate what is on his mind. It is at this moment when fear sets in. Will he ridicule or even mock an idea? Will he actually like it? Will he approve of it and recommend going forth with it? These were thoughts than ran across through my mind in these moments. With a 6’ 4” frame, Dr. Axel is a wiry and lanky figure. This often does not help with the intimidation factor. While he is 67 years old as of now, he has yet to retire and hosts a lab of well over 50 people. He comes in every morning sharp at 8 AM, ready to start the day with a hot mug of coffee in hand. Papers are piled on his desk, awaiting his long tapered fingers and fountain pen in hand. Without a doubt, Dr. Axel is the most brilliant scientist I have met at Columbia and I feel fortunate to have had the chance to do so.

Known as Shingeki no Kyojin or "Attacking Giants" in Japan, Attack on Titan is an incredible anime series where humanity lives inside enclosed walls put forth by Titans. The photo is of two characters, Levi and Petra. One of the most touching moments in the series is when Petra's father attempts to convince Levi to not marry Petra. He says she doesn't know otherwise ans is too young for this. Levi's facial expression is blank and cold. This series has recently scored the 11:30 time block on Toonami of Adult Swim, so all of you should check it out. Excellent series

Parties are the most frightening social settings known to her. She jumps at the sight of tranquil drinks. She screams at the sight of audacious eyes. But the one thing she is most afraid of is him. She is sure of his sex, his motive and his dreams. He wants to make movies. He wishes to sleep under starry skies every night. And he longs to wake next to her, not she.

My P.I. is this person for me and I feel so fortunate to be a student in his lab. Sometimes I don't always have faith in myself but I know he always does. And so even when I am struggling, I often think of him and do my best to pull through. I am always very scared to disappoint him because he trusts me so much. As a young undergraduate, I have published 3 major papers in peer-reviewed journals and I will be presenting at 2 upcoming conferences at Harvard Medical School (HMS) in April '14. Our first major paper is well underway and we are aiming big for it as we tackled an unanswered 80-year old question with quantitative methods! I am happy I ended up this in the lab and I hope to do my best both in academia and research. I have a tendency to gear my full efforts towards my research simply because I like it more and it is strangely therapeutic. I suppose we all make mistakes and we have to forgive ourselves and move forward. And such is life
